100 Years is Not Enough

Peter Whittenberger

“100 Years is Not Enough” is a browser based artwork that allows the viewer to explore a drought ravaged landscape, flooded by the melting of the polar ice caps, containing fossils of beloved characters we have lost to climate change through out the world. The viewer navigates a post-apocalyptic world on a specialized drift boat modeled after the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The specificity of the Sierra Nevada Mountain drift boat reflects my home in the world. The idea for this piece was inspired by the extreme drought the Western United States has endured for the last four years. The viewer paddles the drift boat to the various fossils, revealing the characters that formed them. Using a map of the world and of my local community, “100 Years is Not Enough” is a cautionary tale of the interdependent nature of all things in our planet’s ecosystem.
